META REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO OVERSIGHT BOARD WITH ADDITIONAL FUNDING

By Paolo Carozza, Oversight Board Co-Chair

I am pleased to share that Meta has committed additional funding to secure the Oversight Board’s operations through 2028. Meta has also renewed its commitment to working with the Board by continuing to refer difficult cases and respond to questions about them, consult on broad issues of policy through advisory opinions and publicly respond to our recommendations for change.

As with previous funds, this “top-up” funding will go into the Board’s irrevocable trust, and will be used to help Meta address its most consequential content decisions and the systemic issues that often compound or underlie them. We are grateful to all of our partners who contribute expertise and insights into our work, and are excited for our continued collaboration.

We are especially glad to be announcing this news because social media is going through a period of profound change: AI is transforming how content is generated, curated and governed. And as users’ experiences on digital platforms evolve, so too do the risks to freedom of expression and other human rights – risks that become more complex as AI plays a greater role in policy enforcement, and that require greater transparency from companies.

Our model of continuous review allows us to assess those challenges and risks as they arise, and importantly, it keeps meaningful human judgement involved in content moderation decisions that are increasingly and to an important extent necessarily automated. We will continue to share how these changes impact the human rights of Meta’s users.

We will also share the lessons we have learned from the social media space that have direct relevance to the challenges facing AI models with developers and other industry actors who seek to build technology products that respect the human rights of users globally.

Finally, I’d like to acknowledge Meta’s leadership in building and continuing to support an oversight body that holds the company up to an independent level of public scrutiny that other companies have not yet embraced.

We look forward to continuing our work with many of you and thank you for your partnership.
