Finding lasting solutions to the challenges of content moderation means listening to, understanding and working with other people and organizations.

With this in mind, our Board Members, Trustees and staff regularly take part in a variety of public events, explaining how the Oversight Board operates, and discussing why an independent, global approach to content moderation matters.

We also want to continuously exchange with and learn from others. We frequently host roundtable discussions centered on one of our seven strategic priorities to gather diverse perspectives and inform our work.

Too young to log on? Assessing Age-Based Restrictions on Digital Platforms

OVERVIEWAs jurisdictions worldwide rush to implement age-based restrictions on digital platforms—from Australia's 2025 under-16 social media ban to similar proposals across Asia and Europe—a critical question emerges: Are categorical age bans an effective, rights-respecting way to protect youth?

The Oversight Board invites policymakers, child rights organizations, and digital rights advocates to examine age-based bans through international human rights law, enforcement realities, and youth experiences.

Drawing on the Board's five years applying human rights frameworks to Meta's content governance, including recent research on governing chatbots for 13-17 year-olds, the panel will assess whether these bans meet the necessity and proportionality tests under ICCPR Article 19, and what interventions might better advance youth safety while preserving rights.
